Simulating human judgment in machine translation evaluation campaigns
We present a Monte Carlo model to simulate human judgments in machine translation evaluation campaigns, such as WMT or IWSLT. We use the model to compare different ranking methods and to give guidance on the number of judgments that need to be collected to obtain sufficiently significant distinctions between systems.
متن کاملSpeeded classification in simultaneous masking.
In simultaneous masking, flanking elements impair performance on a visual target. Previous studies on simultaneous masking have predominantly used discrimination threshold estimation to quantify performance on the target. Results based on thresholds suggest that an important factor in simultaneous masking is the strength of grouping between the target and the flankers. Recently Panis and Hermen...
متن کاملMotivated Strategies for Judgment: How Preferences for Particular Judgment Processes can Affect Judgment Outcomes
Beyond motivations to achieve particular outcomes, people also have motivations to use particular strategies while pursuing these outcomes. This article integrates research on the latter strategic preferences and discusses the place of such research in the broader investigation of motivated thinking. A review of studies examining the strategic preferences stemming from both motivations for prom...
متن کاملReliability of Speeded Number-right Multiple-choice Tests Reliability of Speeded Number-right Multiple-choice Tests
Contrary to common belief, reliability estimates of number-right multiple-choice tests are not inflated by speededness. Because examinees guess on questions when they run out of time, the responses to these questions show less consistency with the responses of other questions, and the reliability of the test will be decreased. The surprising implication is that adding questions to a multiple-ch...
متن کاملSURF: Speeded Up Robust Features
We demonstrate the performance of our interest point detector/descriptor scheme SURF – Speeded Up Robust Features – in an application that finds correspondences to a reference image in realtime. The user takes a reference image with a handheld video camera and then moves the camera around the object. The system identifies interest points in every newly acquired image and matches them with the o...
